Mary is a Blacksmith was inspired by a folktale from the Uists, Isles off the West Coast of Scotland. The original story was recorded (in gaelic) in the mid 1800s. I took part of the story and worked on it, with the musician Johanna Kirkpatrick, from the perspective of the blacksmiths daughter, who marries the apprentice in the original.
The original story we produced is available on the tradfest Edinburgh podcast Edinburgh Tradfest. This version was told by me at the Scottish Crannog Centre during their Iron Age ingenuity weekend at the start of this month.
